Eleanor
Coulthard was a beautiful artistic soul who touched the lives of
many. She passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024 on Galiano
Island surrounded by her family. She was born in Oliver in 1941
where she grew up on a fruit orchard. Her childhood was rich in
adventure and freedom as she explored the natural areas around
her. This set the foundation for a long healthy life that was
full of curiosity and adventure.
She went to high school in Oliver, pursued her teaching degree
from the University of British Columbia and this is where she
met the love of her life, John. They got married in 1965 and
spent 58 years together. Their relationship is an extraordinary
testament to the power of love and companionship and was an
inspiration for many. She was the proud mother of her two
children Kathy and Michael. She was an amazing mother, all the
while supporting a successful career as a respected teacher.
Eleanor loved to travel, was passionate about art and music,
loved gardening, entertaining and spending time with her family
and friends. She has lived with John on Galiano for the past 24
years. Many happy memories have been made on Galiano. In her
studio, she created art that reflected her curiosity for life.
She loved nothing more than to create art with her wonderful
friends on the Island. She also had a passion for music, she
thoroughly enjoyed the choir and the travels they had including
multiple trips to Cuba and performing at Carnegie Hall.
Eleanor had an unwavering unconditional love for her
grandchildren and a deep connection with extended family.
Throughout her life, Eleanor has been strong and healthy,
setting an example for her kids and grandkids on how to live
life to its fullest. Even in the face of illness, she approached
each day with courage. She left on her own terms after a valiant
fight against cancer. In her final moments, she was peaceful, in
her home with her family surrounding her.
Eleanor will forever be remembered for her art, spirit of
curiosity and adventure. Her zest for life and love of family
and friends was unwavering and she leaves behind a legacy of
love and laughter. Eleanor did it all, she had a great life,
wonderful husband, family and friends and as she said “it’s been
quite a journey. Its been full of love and joy”.
